Welcome to Janell's One Square Mile. Title inspired by the great line from 'The Wizard of Oz': "Next time I decide to go looking for my heart's desire, I won't go any further than my own back yard." My (Scientologist) boss and I were chatting while cleaning the back garage area, yesterday. I was talking about following God's path in life, which he really didn't understand. He asked if I did anything against God's plan, and why not. I simply explained taking advantages of the opportunities God puts in front of me, is a lot easier than trying to create my own (opportunities).
This verse supports my beliefs! (imagine that!)
I really think this verse, if we really embrace it and know it, tells us the true heart of God. So much of what we pray for, want, don't want and believe is bad in our lives comes from our misunderstanding that God is concerned with our souls. Our bodies, our health, our possessions, even our happiness, hold far less importance to him.
Good response, Cindy. The thing I like about memorizing is that when you spend the time and effort to give the Word that much thought, it not only sinks in and takes on deeper meaning, but it usually touches someone else as well.
Mary, I agree and would only add that God's biggest concern for us is Eternal.

This one is very consoling for us whenever we cannot understand why we are allowed to ... (whatever that ends up bad or whatever ...).
It isn't because He doesn't know or doesn't care, but God has His reasons that we just don't always understand.
I don't pay so many of those taxes. I'm a senior citizen and am exempt from a few things.
We even have a Senior Citizen Discount on our property taxes.
A few all Texans don't have, like State Income Tax. Others I don't pay like lottery and booze taxes.
I generally end up pretty close at the end of the year, I don't like giving the government a free loan either.

I have a bit of a problem just looking at a verse and drawing all kinds of meaning from it. It's like sound bites on the news. After spending umpteen hours reading and attending a bible study for a few years, I realize how much I need to have context around everything. Like who is the Lord saying this to, is it Isiah? and what were they talking about? The only thing I see by the verse alone is the Lord says He has higher expectations than you can ever have.
And I really can't think God's only concern for us is for our eternal souls, and not for our well being here on earth. I think He is quite concerned about how we treat eachother and this earth, and what we do with our time we have here.
Reading the bible and studying passages -- that's all good. But I don't think there is going to be a quiz in the end. (All right that was me just trying to lighten up a bit.) If you can quote a passage to someone in need and it helps them, it was all worth it. But maybe it is more likely in this day and age that one could help another by learning another language. Or understanding another's culture.
I guess that explains why God never seems to follow my plans or my ways.
